Marksman has a slow firing rate, therefore maximizing his damage per shot is important.
The methods to do these are getting items/skills/weapons that increase your damage and chance of critical.
For Marksman, it matters a lot which order you take acquire these items/skills/weapons in, because depending on what order you get them, your scale of critical damage varies.

Do Not Take Canister

First of all, the Canister skill should not be taken not only because players will team kill with it, but also because you are wasting one valuable skill point on it. If the skill point is used instead to add to Critical strike or Marksmanship, it will lead to more critical damage than the canister gives. The canister at maximum level gives only 400 extra damage for one shot. But if chosen carefully, the critical strike can do much more extra damage.

Order Of Choosing Skills/Items

U238 - item that adds damage and chance of critical
Critical Strike Skill - skill that adds chance of critical
Marksmanship Skill - skill that adds passive damage
Black Arrow - item that adds damage and chance of critical

Important to note that for the Critical Strike Skill, once you get level 1, it counts that you have taken the skill and you cannot go back. So once you get level 1, you should focus more on making it level 5 to maximize damage.

Below shows the difference in damage depending on which order you take U238 or Critical Strike first.

U238 then Critical Strike Level 5 -> Total Damage 69350
Critical Strike Level 5 then U238 -> Total Damage 65186

Conclusion:
Taking U238 before taking Critical Strike Skill always does make a big difference, a change of 6.4%.

Further results, with Black Arrow and Marksmanship included:

Marksmanship -> U238 -> BA -> Critical: Total Damage 84349
U238 -> BA -> Marksmanship -> Critical: Total Damage 83984
Marksmanship -> BA -> U238 -> Critical: Total Damage 81784
BA -> U238 -> Marksmanship -> Critical: Total Damage 81603
Marksmanship -> Critical -> U238 -> BA: Total Damage 74525
Critical -> BA -> U238 -> Marksmanship: Total Damage 74521

Conclusion:
Getting Critical Strike LAST always shows a great difference. Getting it FIRST always gives the lowest output.
Getting U238 before BA also shows some increase in performance.
Always take Marksmanship and Scope when you first spawn. Marksmanship adds range anyway, important.
However, if you plan to save points to get Critical Strike later, take into account the risk of not finding U238 or BA until it's too late.

Do NOT Drop and Re-Pick The Items

If you drop items (U238 and BA) and re-pick up them, the above numbers are reset. The results below show this to be very very important.

BA -> U238 -> Critical: Total Damage 80664
BA -> U238 -> Critical -> DROP & PICK BA/U238: Total Damage 71836

Therefore, do not drop BA or U238 if you intend to keep them. It will give even lower damage than if you had gotten Critical Strike first thing:

Critical -> BA -> U238: Total Damage 73360

Taking AP Ammo Instead of U238

Depending on what classes are in the team, it may be better off taking AP ammo and letting U238 go to Grunts or Medic because Grunt has good damage.
No need to say that Heavy Support should get U238. But depending on the number of players (and who ~ ) you can decide to take U238 or not. Because the order of taking U238 is important for Marksman, you may decide to keep U238 on wave 1 even though Heavy Support does not have one. He will almost surely find another one later on.

acquisition for skills is on first level taken, acquisition for items is latest pickup.

e.g. Marksmanship was leveled to level 1, then a BA was picked up

Crit Distribution looks like (the higher on the list, the higher the override priority)

5% 5x
10% 3x
20% 2x
5% 1.2x

Marksmanship was then leveled to level 3, then a U2 was picked up

Crit Distribution looks like

20% 2x
5% 5x
10% 3x
20% 2x
5% 1.6x

BA is then dropped and picked up again

5% 5x
10% 3x
20% 2x
20% 2x
5% 1.6x

At this stage you're ready to take up crit ability as you've got optimal order. Note that while leveling crit will always increase your throughput, at low levels its weaker crit modifier will override the more powerful 5x and 3x modifiers of the BA. Big Crits = Happy Marx. Saved points are therefore somewhat beneficial, of course the whole not finding BA and/or U2 becomes an issue. If crit has been taken then dropping U2 or BA will detrimentally affect your crit output. If crit has been taken after BA but without U2, then do not acquire a U2 as it'll reduce your crit effectiveness heavily.

PEW PEW.
